Hessel Street Hub - Knitting Club

Knit.
Connect.
Make a difference.

Bringing people together through knitting, one stitch at a time. Every week, our community knits hats and boots for abandoned babies in Uganda. Whether you’re an experienced knitter or have never held a pair of needles, you will find a warm welcome here.

Every stitch helps a baby who needs it, and every person is welcome to join.

Welcome to Our Knitting Club

Discover how you can knit for a cause and meet new people in Whitechapel, London.

Our Knitting Club is a friendly, relaxed space where local residents can learn new skills, enjoy a chat over a cuppa, and make something that really matters. Every week, we knit hats and boots for abandoned babies aged 0-2 at a baby care home in Uganda.

Whether you’re an experienced knitter, a complete beginner, or just curious, our skilled volunteers are here to help. All materials are provided, and everyone is welcome, regardless of age, gender, faith, background, or circumstances. Can’t make it along? We can send you a pattern and yarn to knit at home or with your own group.

We believe that small acts of kindness add up. Every stitch brings warmth to a baby who needs it, and every person who joins us becomes part of a community that cares. Come and be part of something special.

Get Involved

There are lots of ways to support our Knitting Club, whether you can join us in person, knit from home or donate supplies.

Join us in person

Come along to our group (timings TBC) at Hessel Street Hub. No booking is needed, and all materials are provided. Childcare support is available if requested in advance.

Knit from home

Can’t make it to a session? We can send you a pattern and yarn so you can knit at home or with your own group. Email us and we’ll get you started.

Share your skills

Do you love to knit? We’re looking for volunteers to help others learn, from first stitches to more advanced patterns. Our club brings together people of all ages, and the best part is learning from one another. Whether you’ve been knitting for fifty years or five months, your knowledge is valuable. No teaching experience is needed, just patience and a love of knitting.

Donate supplies

Our project relies on donations of knitting supplies, and every contribution helps us make more hats and boots for abandoned babies in Uganda. We’re looking for:

  • Soft, baby-friendly yarn in any colour

  • Knitting needles

  • Patterns and knitting books

Please make sure donations are clean and in good condition. You can drop them off at Hessel Street Hub, 9-11 Hessel Street, London, E1 2LR [Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm at number 9 Hessel Street, or Saturday at Team MC Cycles next door], or email us to arrange a drop-off.

All of our sessions are run by volunteers from the local community, and we’re always looking for more people to help. Whether you’d like to teach someone to knit, learn a new stitch yourself, or simply offer a friendly face, your time could make a real difference to someone.

Email us at hesselstreethub@muslimcharity.org.uk if you have any questions about the Knitting Club, would like to join us on a Thursday, or want to donate yarn, needles or other knitting supplies. We’d love to hear from you.

If you’re ready to volunteer, you can apply directly using our volunteer application form, no experience necessary, just enthusiasm and a willingness to help.

Sign up to join the club here. Or, if you can’t make it along, email us and we’ll send you a pattern and yarn to knit at home or with your own group.
